What is Autism ?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism and its associated behaviors have been estimated to occur in as many as 1 in 500 individuals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1997). Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not affect the chance of autism's occurrence.

New Treatments
I don't believe autism is caused by a defective gene or something like that. I believe autism is caused by some kind of vicious cycle that completely upsets several important metabolic processes that causes the brain to disfunction.
I believe that the vicious cycle starts with dysbiosis in the gut. The dysbiosis is often the result of antibiotics. Dysbiosis means that the bacteria in the gut are wrongly balanced: The "bad" bacteria, yeasts and/or fungi have outnumbered the "good" bacteria. Because antibiotics almost completely wipe out all good bacteria, together with most bad bacteria, this can cause a big problem. When a certain strain of bacteria or fungi is immune to the antibiotic, it will survive the antibiotic and will prosper in the gut, because all other strains have diseased. Dysbiosis is the result.

The bad bacteria, yeast or fungi then start to produce toxins as waste products of their metabolism. This causes excess levels of these toxins, like arabinose, to be absorbed. One of these yeast metabolites, arabinose, is often very high in the urine of autistic people. Arabinose has a drastic effect on human metabolism. It blocks vitamin B6, biotin and lipoic acid function. Because many enzymes depend on these vitamins, many processes are halted, amongst others, the production of sulfate from methionine. Sulfation is very important for the walls of the intestines. Without enough sulfate, the walls of the intestines will deteriorate and further, the IgA immune function will be depressed. This will make the intestines a very safe harbor for the same yeasts that originally produced the arabinose. This means that they can continue to make even more arabinose without being bothered by the host's immune system: A vicious cycle. This is just one example of one yeast metabolite; One can imagine that a complete dysbiosis can have drastic effects on health. Especially because the reduced sulfation also causes a permeable gut, which allows undigested proteins and other toxins to enter the blood, pass the blood-brain barrier and completely upset the brain.

Primary Goal: Restoring the intestines
The SCDiet is the perfect treatment for autism. It starves the bacteria, yeasts and fungi in the intestines, by only allowing the foods that can easily be absorbed by the intestines. That way, the foods won't reach the bacteria, yeasts and fungi and they will starve over time. I just received this: (Nov 12th 2003)
The most exciting things are unfolding at and the web site for "elaineschildren", the forum for parents with autistic children who follow SCD. As you may know this is Elaine Gottschall's project and joy now after helping so many adults on the diet. These children may be able to lead normal lives, thanks to the SCD, something their parents could only dream of.

Yet another testimonial
On the site Recovering from Autism you will find a report of a mother and her daughter with autism. Right now, she's healed and is getting A-grades at school.
